February 5th, 2007 - INDOC CENTER

February 5th, 2007
The Navy/Marine Corps Reserve center in Las Vegas, NV holds all branches of the Service to which the INDOC center was created to assist with the process of Soldier, Sailors, Marines and Air Men is support of “Preventive Medicine Shield”. To most of the soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Air Men joked about was that it was called PMS from short and that everyone was, well you get the drift, others would be the first to say that “Preventive Medicine Shield” really meant “Pack my shit” because people were being sent everywhere in support of this operation. For the medics would simply call it “Piss and Moan syndrome” because you can’t make everyone happy during a deployment and this one was the mother of all deployments with all the reservist being called to active duty.
Influenza (commonly called the “flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses and with all the coughing and running noses I’m not taking any chances because it will only be a matter of time before things start to get tight around the base. The Medics out of the shack did a safety briefing to keep us informed about the prevention and the signs that we see.
SSGT. Doc Johnson from DET 1304 told us that Influenza usually starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms:
• Fever (usually high)
• Headache
• Tiredness (can be extreme)
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Body aches
• Diarrhea and vomiting
And this didn’t make me feel any better with everyone having some, all or one of these symptoms are me. Would I get it, when would I get it?. Who knows…Only time will tell. The Flu came and went through out the base with no real problems and as predicted our supplies got low but without problems with the FOB “Iron horse” getting a extension on a warehousing unit so I think that group will be fine with this until the riots calm down. With Marshal Law it was easier to do our jobs and get to places with out too many on-lookers.
